Gates pledged $50 million aid to China: is it naivety, selfishness or betrayal of the free world?

Liberal billionaire Bill Gates on Thursday last week announced a $50 million collaboration with China’s Tsinghua University, and met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday.

A meeting while China continues its Uyghur Genocide may only indicate Gates’ implicit approval of this tragedy. Pledging a huge amount of US dollars to China, whatever the name of the project, clearly results in support for the genocide.

Is Gates just supporting a university? It is indisputable that there are no independent researchers or research institutions in China. There are only members, partners, and participants in captive institutions of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Chinese society is made up of this triple constituency. If there is a fourth group, which takes an independent stand, the place where it is found is in the Chinese prisons.

Those who do not understand or acknowledge these facts prove that their knowledge of China is close to zero—unless they are willing accomplices of the regime.

These facts are evident in China’s laws, documents, and media. In the case of Bill Gates, the Tsinghua University website states, that on February 25, 2022, the Organization Department of the CCP Central Committee announced that it had appointed Qiu Yong as the secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University and Wang Xiqin as the president of Tsinghua University.

From these official data, it is clear that the school is run by the CCP, i.e., the same organization that is committing the Uyghur Genocide and other crimes. Naturally, US $50 million will strengthen the actions of the murderer (the CCP) and indirectly contribute to the acceleration and expansion of the ongoing genocide.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation explained in a statement that the purpose of the funding is to improve health research and the health situation of the world’s poorest people.

How can a country that perpetrates genocide against an ethnic group under its rule, be seriously considered as a partner for helping humanity?

The Uyghur genocide has been on the agenda for five years as an international issue. To date, more than twenty governments and parliaments, including those of the US, the UK, France, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Taiwan, have defined the Uyghur situation as a genocide. Additionally, fifty countries, led by the US, have on at least three occasions called on China to stop the Uyghur Genocide. More than sixty countries, most of them either poor and/or dictatorial, including Cuba, North Korea, and Saudi Arabia, have denied that China has carried out the Uyghur Genocide. Some of these countries are claiming that the Uyghur Genocide has been invented by the US as a propaganda tool to contain China.

Is Bill Gates, who is supposedly promoting humanitarian causes, unaware of this serious humanitarian problem on the international stage? Isn’t it obvious that health problems and death emerge tragically wherever a genocide is taking place? Or does Bill Gates think that the stances of dependent and dictatorial countries that support China are correct, and democratic countries, led by the US, are incorrect? If he does not believe the statements of the elected US government, why does he believe the statements of an unelected, unchecked leadership, that of the CCP, and its supporters?

UN experts have defined the Uyghur situation as a crime against humanity. If Bill Gates doubts the impartiality of Western politicians, does he doubt the impartiality of UN experts?

Bill Gates trusts and loves China’s chartered research institutes and researchers, and gives them financial and moral support. Why doesn’t he listen to comments and warnings about the Uyghur genocide by authoritative researchers, such as German expert Adrian Zenz, American experts Sean R. Roberts and James Millward, and other influential academic institutions, such as the Australian Strategic Policy Institute?

If Bill Gates is truly concerned with the health problems of the world’s poor, he should care about the people in concentration camps in the Uyghur region. The poor health status of more than three million people who have remained in the camps for six years has been reflected on social media. Previously, Radio Free Asia reported 156 detainees’ deaths in a camp of Kucha County in six months. Recently, it reported that eighteen bodies were released in one day from Tumshuq Prison in Maralbeshi during Ramadan this year. More than fifty prisoners, such as prominent religious scholar Muhammed Salih Hajim, poets Abdulla Sawut and Haji Mirzahid Kerimi, writer Nurmemet Tohti, businessman philanthropist Yaqub Haji, textile entrepreneur Kurbanjan Abdukerim, student Abdusalam Mamat, and religious cleric Abdulreshit Seley Hajim all died in prison from illness.

The way of saving Uyghurs is not handing money to the murderers. On the contrary, withdrawing support is the condition for stopping genocide. Does Bill Gates really want to cooperate with China in the healthcare industry, or was he planning to bribe China with US$50 million to protect his business interests?

In terms of the Uyghur genocide, Bill Gates seems to have denied the humanitarian responsibility placed on him because of his wealth and fame.

There is also a larger and more important side of the issue. It is clear that China is a strategic competitor of the United States, Gates’s own country, and is in conflict with international organizations, often including the UN, on international issues, such as the invasion of Ukraine, the Taiwan problem, and the Uyghur Genocide. China is sending military equipment to Russia via Iran while the western world is spending over $100 billion in aid to Ukraine.

In such a situation, is it right for Bill Gates to work with the Beijing Municipal Government, which houses all Chinese high officials, and Tsinghua University, which is affiliated with China’s military? How can the conscience of a citizen of the free world accept that 50 million US dollars are given to a country that supports all the dictators and atrocities in the world, threatens its neighbors, oppresses its own citizens, and corrupts the world?

Is it naivety, selfishness, or a plain betrayal of the free world?
