"The Cry of East Turkistan Echoes in Tuzla: "Where is the Blue Sky’ Performed on Stage

The play “Where is the Blue Sky,” which addresses the human rights violations occurring in East Turkistan, deeply moved the audience with the power of literature and music.

The identity struggle and human rights violations experienced by the Uyghur people were this time conveyed through the language of art. The play “Where is the Blue Sky,” staged by the Nuh Theater Group, met with the audience on the evening of Friday, June 20, at the Tuzla Şifa Cultural Center.

The work, penned by Mehmet Akif Çanakçı, focuses on the oppression and resistance in East Turkistan, aiming to establish both a literary and a conscientious narrative on stage. A powerful atmosphere was created by incorporating excerpts from Alev Alatlı's speeches on human rights, poems by Mahmud Darwish, Mürsel Sönmez, and Gökhan Nair, as well as quotes from İsmet Özel into the script.

Mehmet Akif Çanakçı served as the production's General Artistic Director, with Süennur Yılmaz as the Assistant Director and researcher-author Abdullah Oğuz as the script consultant. The music director was Ferda Avcıoğlu, while Nurullah Gölbaşı and Talha Sağlam were on the technical team.

Taking the stage after the performance, Ekrem Uygurhan, President of the East Turkistan Youth Independence Movement, thanked the theater group with the words, “This play has sincerely reflected the tragedy in East Turkistan; it has deeply affected us.”

At the end of the event, “sangza,” a traditional bread unique to Uyghur cuisine, was served, while folk songs sung along with the audience during the interactive parts of the play created emotional moments in the hall. The play concluded with warm applause from the audience.
